What to Eat Around Your Yoga Session

4 min read

What you eat before and after your yoga session has a direct impact on the quality of your practice and the speed of your recovery. Most students either eat too much too soon before class or eat nothing at all, and both approaches undermine their results.

What to Eat Before Your Session

The goal before yoga is to have enough energy to practice without feeling heavy or uncomfortable. Eat a light meal or snack one to two hours before your session. Good options include a banana with almond butter, a small bowl of oats, or a handful of dates with water. Avoid heavy proteins, fried foods, and large meals within two hours of practice.

What Your Body Needs After Your Session

Within thirty to sixty minutes of finishing your practice, eat a meal that includes protein and complex carbohydrates. Eggs with vegetables, a smoothie with protein powder, or grilled chicken with brown rice are all excellent choices.

Avoid skipping the post-practice meal. Recovery happens in the hours after your session, and nutrition is its primary fuel.

The One Thing Most Students Overlook

Water. Drink it consistently throughout the day, not just around your sessions. Students who hydrate well recover faster, feel more energized, and perform better on the mat than those who do not.
